“Noshtvi” is a small workshop in the heart of the Rhodopes, created with the mission of reviving the ancient tradition of trahana. In addition, in their cozy guesthouse they organize trakhana-making workshops, where everyone can touch the magic of tradition and learn the secrets of natural fermentation. Harman Kaya is a large Thracian rock sanctuary situated on a high rocky plateau in the Eastern Rhodopes. Archaeological remains suggest a primarily military function, with limited space for permanent habitation. Ustra is a medieval fortress dramatically positioned on a narrow rocky ridge in the Eastern Rhodopes, making it one of the most visually striking fortifications in the region. The site dates mainly to the 10th–12th centuries and was part of the Byzantine defensive system controlling mountain passes and local communication routes. Its elongated layout follows the natural shape of the rock, with steep cliffs providing protection on most sides. Remains of fortification walls, towers, and internal structures indicate a strongly fortified military site rather than a civilian settlement. Due to its high elevation and clear lines of sight, Ustra likely functioned as a lookout and control point within a wider network of medieval fortresses.

Guest house “Belopolyane” is a cozy retreat nestled in the heart of the Eastern Rhodopes, in an ecologically clean area near the Bulgarian-Greek border. It offers more than just accommodation – it invites guests to enjoy a slower, more mindful, and nature-connected experience in peaceful surroundings. The house is available for rent and often welcomes visitors drawn by its proximity to the ancient Roman villa “Armira” – one of Bulgaria’s most valuable archaeological discoveries. In summer, especially during Enyovden (Midsummer Day), the place comes to life – people from across the country gather to celebrate in the old tradition: picking flowers, weaving wreaths, and honoring the day in harmony with nature. Guest house “Belopolyane” also promotes support for local crafts by providing information on where to buy authentic Bulgarian tahini, honey, and other locally made products.

The farm in the village of Pchelarovo is a small organic initiative committed to sustainable agriculture, cultivated with dedication and care. A diverse range of fruit trees grows on the property, including cherries, peaches, plums, apricots, and cornelian cherries. In a second orchard near the village of Postnik, close to Studen Kladenets, apples, pears, and quinces are also grown. The vegetable garden produces both traditional crops—such as tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, garlic, watermelons, and melons—and a selection of leafy greens like arugula, kale, chard, spinach, parsley, and dill. One of the farm’s main crops is Mursal tea (Sideritis scardica). The vineyard, originally conventional, is now managed without chemical fertilizers. In addition to farming, the initiative offers educational activities and regularly welcomes school groups from Haskovo for hands-on learning experiences. Last year, guests also joined in the traditional grapevine pruning for Trifon Zarezan, a Bulgarian holiday celebrating vine-growers. As part of a European project, the farm has built a 100 sq.m. solar-powered drying facility, where this year it will begin controlled drying of fruits and herbs such as cherries, plums, and Mursal tea.

Zhenda Lodge &amp; DLS Zhenda are key partners in the ongoing rewilding of the Zhenda area in the Eastern Rhodopes, a core priority landscape where nature recovery initiatives are actively unfolding. The Zhenda area spans thousands of hectares of forest, grassland, and open habitat once shaped by forestry and hunting, now being transitioned toward a wilder, ecologically rich future through local and landscape-scale conservation action.Through collaboration with the Rewilding Rhodopes team and other stakeholders, Zhenda is becoming a showcase for restoring natural dynamics. This includes the establishment of a free-roaming European bison population, helping to re-establish lost herbivore influence on habitat structure and biodiversity recovery. Due to their height and inaccessibility, the niches were most likely symbolic rather than functional, associated with Thracian religious beliefs connected to the sky, the sun, and ancestor worship. The density and scale of the features suggest that Gluhite Kamani functioned as a major regional sanctuary used for collective rituals rather than individual worship. “Zlatoustovo” is a small family farm that produces delicious cheese and butter from extensively raised cows in one of the most peaceful and beautiful places in the Eastern Rhodopes.

Konevski Waterfall is a picturesque and hidden natural cascade located in one of the strams that flow into Studen Kladenets Reservoir. The waterfall forms where the stream from Konevo enters the reservoir, and is tucked beneath steep cliffs and rocky slopes, creating a romantic and secluded spot surrounded by nature.Access to the waterfall depends on water levels. During spring and high water periods, it is most easily reached by kayak or boat from nearby water bases, with opportunities to paddle directly up to the falls. In drier seasons, water levels drop and the falls can be approached on foot from the shore.

Monyak is a medieval fortress strategically positioned on a high rocky peak overlooking the Arda River valley in the Eastern Rhodopes. The site was first occupied during the Late Antiquity and reached its peak between the 10th and 12th centuries as part of the Byzantine defensive system in the region. Its steep cliffs provided natural protection, while the fortress walls, towers, and inner structures controlled an important route along the river. Archaeological evidence indicates both military and administrative functions, with Monyak serving as a key stronghold guarding movement through the central Rhodopes. Arda River Meander Viewpoint offers a striking panoramic view of the Arda River as it carves a dramatic bend through the volcanic cliffs of the Eastern Rhodopes. The viewpoint is also the best place in the area to observe flying vultures, which often soar at eye level, riding the thermal currents above the river and cliffs. It’s a quiet place to pause, breathe, and experience one of Eastern Rhodopes' most iconic natural scenes.

Casa Lambuh combines traditional Rhodopean comfort with modern amenities. The house is a restored stone building over 100 years old, located in the village of Lambuh, overlooking the wall of Ivaylovgrad Reservoir, about 13 km north of Ivaylovgrad. The guest house offers three independent double rooms, each with a private entrance and en-suite bathroom, accommodating six guests plus one extra bed. Guests share a dining area with a fully equipped kitchen, fireplace, internet access, and satellite TV. This section is also part of a mountain bike trail, so extra attention is recommended.The descent leads to the final bike platform, shaped like a jump, before the route returns along the same dirt road used at the start, completing the loop.This is a short, dynamic route, suitable for hikers looking for a quick climb and forest scenery, with shared use by cyclists.

Chit Kaya is a unique archaeological, cultural, and natural site in the Eastern Rhodopes. It is located on Chit Kaya Peak at 392 m elevation, approximately 600 m south of Lisitsite village (straight line) and about 15 km southeast of Kardzhali.Access to Lisitsite village is via the longest suspension bridge in Bulgaria—a striking 260 m-long structure crossing the Studen Kladenets Reservoir. From the village, a scenic hike of around 1 hour leads to the summit of Chit Kaya. The most commonly used route starts near the village fountain, close to the bridge, and offers beautiful views over the reservoir. The trail is marked with red tourist markings, which begin as early as Shiroko Pole village.Historical significance and layoutThe Thracian fortress of Chit Kaya dates to the 4th–1st century BCE and was part of the regional defensive system. It occupies about 1 200 m² along the ridge of the elongated peak. The site is naturally protected by steep rock faces to the west and south, while water surrounds the rock massif on three sides. The most accessible approach is from the east–northeast, where a dry-stone defensive wall was built. Today, the wall is difficult to distinguish due to dense vegetation. Although no visible building remains exist on the flatter ridge, fragments of household pottery indicate long-term habitation. No systematic archaeological excavations have been carried out so far.Rock sanctuary and cult nichesAlong the southern face of the rock massif are approximately 50 trapezoidal rock-cut niches, a typical feature of Thracian rock cult architecture. Arranged in three rows, some niches are partially eroded, yet their characteristic shapes remain clearly recognizable.The site is further distinguished by striking natural rock formations resembling human and animal figures, locally known as “The Alien,” “The Skull,” “The Face,” and “The Fish Head.” These features enhance the site’s mystical atmosphere and cultural depth.Archaeological traces in the surrounding areaAt the foot of the rocky peak, between the village and the Arda and Varbitsa rivers, traces of a Thracian settlement have been identified, including two burial mounds and several disturbed graves from the same period. At the base of the rock massif, there is also a single-chamber, semi-spherical rock-cut tomb.Panoramic views and strategic positionFrom Chit Kaya, clear visual connections can be made to other ancient fortresses in the region: near Ivantsi village to the north/northwest, Harmankaya above Gluhar village to the southwest, and Kesetepe (Klissetepe) near Bivolyane village to the southeast. This confirms the site’s former strategic defensive and ritual importance.
